About a year ago, I was shoveling piles of grocery store waste into a trash compactor beneath the highrises along the lakefront. Today, I stood on the eightieth floor of one of those very highrises, donning a suit & tie, and watching the bustle of The Loop from above. Things are nicer up high, partly because the true smell of it all can’t reach the top. But I have smelled it.
